Giants Open Harbaugh Era in West Virginia With Jaxson Dart Firmly in Command

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va., Aug. 4, 2026 — The New York Giants are a week into the first training camp of the John Harbaugh era, and for the first time in years the quarterback position is not the question hanging over the operation.

Jaxson Dart, entering his second season, is the unambiguous starter. The Ole Miss product, taken 25th overall in the 2025 draft after the Giants traded up, opened his rookie year as the backup to Russell Wilson but was named the starter in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers and held the job the rest of the way, missing two games in concussion protocol. Veteran Jameis Winston, signed to a two-year contract in 2025, returns as the primary backup.

Wilson is no longer part of the picture. He was benched after three starts in 2025, his one-year deal expired, and on June 3 he announced his retirement after 14 NFL seasons, joining CBS Sports as an analyst on "The NFL Today."

The larger change is on the sideline. Harbaugh, named the 21st head coach in franchise history in January after 18 seasons leading the Baltimore Ravens, assembled a staff that includes 15 coaches who worked under him in Baltimore. Matt Nagy — the 2018 Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year with Chicago and, most recently, the Chiefs' offensive coordinator — runs the offense. Brian Callahan, the former Tennessee Titans head coach, works directly with Dart as passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Dennard Wilson (defense) and Chris Horton (special teams, and also assistant head coach) complete the coordinator group.

Camp itself was relocated this summer. With the team's East Rutherford facility under construction and MetLife Stadium coming off World Cup duty, the Giants are working July 28 through Aug. 8 at The Greenbrier in West Virginia. Asked what had pleased him about the opening days, Harbaugh pointed to the basics: "The effort. The mindset, attitude, energy, determination to do things right."

Along the offensive line, practice reports have consistently listed the first unit as Andrew Thomas at left tackle, Jon Runyan Jr. at left guard, John Michael Schmitz Jr. at center, rookie Francis Mauigoa at right guard and Jermaine Eluemunor at right tackle. Mauigoa, a first-team All-American right tackle at Miami, was the No. 10 overall pick in the 2026 draft, a selection the Giants acquired from Cincinnati in the Dexter Lawrence trade. New York used its other top-10 pick, No. 5 overall, on Ohio State's Arvell Reese, who has been moved to inside linebacker.

The exhibition slate begins Aug. 15 at home against the Minnesota Vikings, followed by a trip to Miami on Aug. 22 and the annual meeting with the Jets on Aug. 28. The regular season opens Sept. 13 at home against the Dallas Cowboys on "Sunday Night Football."
