MLS Eastern Conference Playoff Race: Every Point Matters With Eight Games Left

NEW YORK — Eight games remain in the 2026 MLS regular season, and the Eastern Conference is producing the closest title race the league has seen in years. Five teams are separated by seven points across the top seven spots, and the difference between finishing first and missing the playoffs entirely runs through a series of direct matchups that give this final stretch an almost elimination-bracket feel.

NYCFC lead the conference with 50 points, one ahead of Inter Miami and two ahead of Columbus Crew. Behind them, Orlando City and New England Revolution are locked on 45 points, and the New York Red Bulls — sitting seventh, the final playoff position — trail the Crew by just three points. The bottom three playoff seeds are separated from the first team outside the playoffs by a single point.

For NYCFC, the path to the Supporters’ Shield runs through three direct clashes with conference rivals: Columbus on August 14, the Hudson River Derby against the Red Bulls on August 17, and a season-closing road trip to Inter Miami on September 28. Win all three and the Shield is almost certainly theirs. Lose any one and the mathematics become significantly more complicated.

Inter Miami, led by Lionel Messi in what may be his final MLS campaign, have the conference’s most dangerous attack but a defensive record that has cost them points in tight games. Their remaining schedule includes two home fixtures at Chase Stadium that are all but certain to sell out, and a trip to Columbus in mid-September that could function as a de facto conference final in everything but name.

Columbus, the 2025 MLS Cup runner-up, has been the most consistent team in the East over the past six weeks and holds the best goal differential in the conference. Their defensive structure under head coach Wilfried Nancy remains the template that every attacking team in the league is trying to solve.

For the Red Bulls, the signing of Gómez has injected optimism into a September that looked bleak two weeks ago. But seven of their remaining eight games are against teams currently in playoff positions, and their margin for error is effectively zero. In an Eastern Conference this compressed, that is both a burden and, for a club that thrives under pressure, a familiar kind of motivation.
