NYCFC Hold Eastern Conference Lead as MLS Playoff Push Enters Final Stretch

NEW YORK — New York City FC enter the final eight games of the 2026 MLS regular season holding first place in the Eastern Conference on goal difference over Inter Miami, and the mood inside the club’s training facility in Orangeburg reflects an organization that believes this is finally its year.
NYCFC have lost just once at Yankee Stadium since May, a run of form that has transformed an already passionate home crowd into one of the most intimidating atmospheres in the league. Their 4–1 dismantling of Atlanta United on Saturday, in front of a sold-out 47,000-strong crowd, extended the winning streak at home to nine matches.
Head coach Nick Cushing, now in his fourth season with the club, credited the team’s defensive cohesion as the primary driver of the run. “When we’re hard to beat, we’re dangerous,” Cushing said after Saturday’s win. “The boys trust each other right now, and that’s worth more than any individual performance.”
Leading scorer Cucho Hernandez has been in exceptional form, tallying nine goals and four assists across the last eleven games. His partnership with Mounir Nasri in the final third has given NYCFC an attacking dynamism they lacked in the early part of the season, when inconsistent performances in the Bronx left the club trailing Orlando and Columbus in the standings.
The remaining schedule is demanding. NYCFC face Columbus Crew, New England Revolution, and Inter Miami in their final three home games, all of which carry direct playoff seeding implications. Their road fixtures include a trip to Toronto and a potential title-clincher in Philadelphia in the penultimate week of the season.
A first Supporters’ Shield in club history would represent a landmark for a franchise that has reached the MLS Cup Final twice without winning the league title. Club officials declined to discuss targets publicly, but privately the organization is preparing for a deep October playoff run.
