Red Bulls Academy Product Luca Orellano Makes Stunning MLS Debut With Two Goals

HARRISON, N.J. — Luca Orellano had been training with the Red Bulls’ first team for six months. On Wednesday night, he introduced himself to MLS in the most emphatic way imaginable.

The 19-year-old Bronx native, a product of the Red Bulls’ New York academy since he was 11, came off the bench in the 62nd minute of a 0–0 draw against D.C. United and scored twice in eight minutes — a left-footed strike from outside the box in the 71st and a headed finish from a Lewis Morgan cross in the 79th — to give his club a 2–0 win and set off one of the loudest celebrations Red Bull Arena has witnessed in recent memory.

“I’ve dreamed of that my whole life,” Orellano said through a visible struggle to compose himself in the post-match interview. “My family was in the stands. My neighborhood was watching. I can’t explain what that feels like.” His parents, Argentine immigrants who moved to the Bronx before Luca was born, were visible in the family section, embracing after the final whistle.

Orellano’s path to the first team is a story the Red Bulls’ academy program has been building toward for years. He was identified at 11 in a tryout session in Mott Haven and has been with the organization since, moving through the under-14, under-17, and under-20 squads before signing his first professional contract in January. He spent the spring on loan with Red Bulls II in MLS Next Pro.

Head coach Troy Lesesne said after the match that Orellano had earned his debut through the quality of his training and his performance on loan. “We’ve known for a while that Luca was ready. Tonight he proved it to everyone else.” The club has not announced whether he will be in the starting lineup for Saturday’s home match against Chicago Fire.

For the Red Bulls, Orellano’s emergence comes at a critical moment in the season. The club is in the midst of a playoff push and just completed the signing of designated player Sebastián Gómez. Adding a home-grown player who can impact games off the bench gives the team a depth option that no transfer window can manufacture. In the Bronx, at least, they already know who he is.
