NEW YORK — Stony Brook University on Long Island opened a major biotech incubator this week in an effort to stop a steady exodus of university-trained researchers and companies to Manhattan and Boston, positioning the new lab-and-office complex as a suburban counterweight to the Flatiron and Long Island City clusters that have dominated venture interest in recent years.

The Stony Brook Long Island Biotech Incubator, a 120,000-square-foot facility on Route 25A a block from the university's campus and the Stony Brook train station, offers bench space for wet labs, shared core instruments, a small GMP suite, modular office lofts and a 200-seat auditorium for investor days and symposia, university planners said. The complex includes a public startup café and a co-investment desk meant to let local venture firms and angel groups match university seed grants.

"We built this to give our grads a place to start without immediately having to chase rent and an appointment in Manhattan," said Maya Chen, director of the Stony Brook Biotech Incubator, who formerly led commercialization at a research park in Melville. "If you can incubate, scale and meet investors here on Route 25A, you dramatically change career decisions people make after they defend their theses or finish a postdoc."

By the numbers: the incubator houses 72 wet-bench stations, 48 private offices, three shared chemistry suites and a biomanufacturing pilot line capable of producing 10 liters per run. Stony Brook said the university and state harnessed $150 million in capital for the project, with $65 million from a state competitiveness grant and $45 million in university bonds; the remainder is pledged by a consortium of regional venture funds. Administrators estimate the complex will support 60 startups and create 310 direct jobs and roughly 1,000 indirect jobs across Long Island within five years. An internal alumni survey cited by the university found that 62% of life-sciences Ph.D. recipients left Long Island for Manhattan or Boston within three years of graduation prior to the incubator's opening.

The funding structure binds the university to local growth: Suffolk County provided a tax-increment financing package and the university committed to a five-year, below-market lease to lower upfront costs for tenants. Stony Brook officials said they also negotiated shared purchase agreements for reagents and instrumentation with a network of nearby hospitals in Huntington and Patchogue to reduce operating costs for early-stage companies.

"For a small gene-therapy company like ours, the cost and logistics of moving to Manhattan were prohibitive, but staying on Long Island without a hub meant losing access to capital conversations," said Jamal Ortiz, chief executive of LIX Biotherapeutics, a Huntington-founded startup that signed a two-year lease in Suite 3B. "This facility changes the calculus — we can do our preclinical work here, host investors in the auditorium, and still jump on the LIRR if we need a meeting in Midtown or the West Village."

The opening is also a test of whether suburban incubators can attract Manhattan-based venture capital. Executives at several New York venture firms, who asked not to be named because investment plans are confidential, said they would evaluate portfolio companies incubating on Long Island for follow-on rounds but that they would likely maintain their Manhattan presence for deal sourcing. A fictional but representative voice, Clara Nguyen, partner at Harbor Ridge Capital, said, "We expect to follow the companies where the talent is. If Stony Brook can deliver pipeline and reproducible data, we'll be at their demo days in Stony Brook Village as readily as we are in the Flatiron Building."

Long Island’s geography and transit realities are a central part of the equation. The incubator sits a 40-minute LIRR ride from Penn Station for express trains from Ronkonkoma and is connected by a shuttle for late-night lab staff, both measures intended to ease commutes for investors and collaborators coming from Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. Local boosters said proximity to Stony Brook's teaching hospitals and the East Setauket research corridor — including smaller contract-research outfits on Route 347 — gives tenant companies clinical trial partners without a Manhattan presence.

Neighborhood leaders and business owners in Stony Brook Village and nearby Port Jefferson said they expect ancillary economic benefits: new restaurants on Main Street catering to scientists and visiting investors, demand for lab-suitable industrial space in adjacent hamlets, and an uptick in housing searches by postdocs and young founders. Critics, however, cautioned that without deeper venture commitments and transportation improvements — including additional evening LIRR service and faster shuttle links to Ronkonkoma — the incubator risks becoming a daytime research park rather than a full ecosystem where companies scale, hire and stay.

Stony Brook officials said they view the incubator as the first phase of a decade-long strategy that may include a dedicated seed fund and satellite co-working suites in the Brooklyn Navy Yard and Long Island City, and they have set an internal target to cut the outflow of life-sciences graduates to Manhattan and Boston by half within five years. If the early tenants hit expected milestones this summer and investor days draw the kind of Manhattan and Boston firms university leaders hope for, the new complex could mark the start of a long Island renaissance for biotech — a test of whether the region can keep its own scientists home while still tapping metropolitan capital and expertise.
