A metabolic-training approach once confined to elite athletes has swept the city's running clubs — and exercise physiologists say the hype has real evidence behind it.

NEW YORK — On the loop around the Central Park reservoir at dawn, a growing share of runners are moving at a pace that looks, to the untrained eye, almost leisurely — able to hold a full conversation, deliberately holding back. They are practicing what has become the city's fitness obsession of the summer: "Zone 2" training, a low-intensity endurance method that has migrated from the labs of professional endurance sport into the feeds and group chats of amateur runners across the five boroughs.
The idea rests on the concept of heart-rate zones, with Zone 2 defined as a comfortably moderate effort — roughly 60 to 70 percent of a person's maximum heart rate — sustained for long stretches. Exercise physiologists say training at that intensity nudges the body to build more mitochondria, the cellular engines that burn fat for fuel, and to grow the dense capillary networks that deliver oxygen to working muscles. The payoff, they say, is a bigger aerobic base that lets athletes go faster and longer once they do turn up the intensity.
"The counterintuitive part is that going slow is the point, not a compromise," said Dr. Elena Marchetti, an exercise physiologist who studies endurance metabolism. "Most recreational runners spend all their time in a gray zone — too hard to build a real base, too easy to be a genuine hard workout. Zone 2 forces a discipline that pays off precisely because it feels too easy." The trend has reshaped the rhythm of the city's running culture. Group-run leaders in Prospect Park describe splitting their packs into a faster cohort and a deliberately slow "conversational" cohort, and running stores report brisk sales of chest-strap heart-rate monitors as newcomers try to keep their effort honest. Coaches say the hardest part is psychological: convincing driven New Yorkers, wired to equate value with exhaustion, that easing off is not laziness but strategy.
Skeptics note that the enthusiasm has outrun the nuance, with some social-media evangelists promising transformations that the research does not support and others obsessing over the precise heart-rate number to the point of paralysis. Marchetti urged perspective. "The best training is the training you'll actually keep doing," she said. "If slowing down keeps you injury-free and consistent through a New York summer, that's the real benefit — not the decimal point on your watch. Consistency beats intensity almost every time."
